Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Unit Lead will serve as a member of the Leadership Team, providing support to cabin counselors. The Unit Lead will be responsible for the oversight, direction, and programming of one unit (Base, Alpine, or Summit) in camp for the season.

Summer Season: (5/26 - 8/2) with room and board.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate cabin life and values-based programming.
  • Directly supervise staff in designated units, provide leadership and guidance to all staff.
  • Provide leadership and administrative support as directed by coordinating, organizing, or leading camp activities or by providing administrative office support as needed.
  • Participate in Leadership Team training prior to staff training
  • Prepare for, assist in leading, and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Direct programs that meet or exceed ACA and state standards.
  • Assume responsibility for the heath/welfare of campers and staff entrusted to his/her charge.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Observe camper and staff behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Consult with the Associate Executive Director daily concerning problems that need to be addressed and/or excellent staff performance.
  • Plan and execute unit campouts each week in collaboration with the Trip Coordinator
  • Demonstrate proper care and storage of all equipment and supplies.
  • Complete routine and required forms to include, but not limited to: staff evaluations, program supply requests, maintenance request forms, and incident and injury reports.
  • Create and maintain a Unit Lead manual through the season
  • May be called upon to live with a cabin group or to assist counselors with a cabin group.
  • Play an active role in all camp activities.
  • Will work stayover weekends as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 21 or two years of previous camp experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience with youth or family programming.
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants.
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth, and should relate well to all age levels and backgrounds of people. The ability to be diplomatic, solve problems, and be an available resource, mentor, and leader to all staff. Ability to plan, initiate and lead small and large group activities
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification
