Overview

Water Fitness Instructor

The YMCA of the Pikes Peak region is seeking enthusiastic Water Fitness Instructors to teach a variety of classes.  This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.  The Group Exercise Instructor will conduct water fitness classes including but not limited to Aqua Zumba, Aqua Fit, and Aqua Aerobics with an emphasis on health and well-being to participants of all ages.   You will maintain constant supervision of students to ensure safety.  The Water Fitness Instructor will create positive, nurturing, and cooperative relationships with students. You will also facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A WATER FITNESS INSTRUCTOR:

  • Lead water fitness class following YMCA Water Fitness Instructor Guidelines, protocols.
  • Provide music that meets YMCA standards.
  • Enforce aquatic rules and policies.
  • Record and maintain attendance records.
  • Set up facility or equipment, store equipment, and secure facility upon completion of class.
  • Prepare progressive exercise plans.
  • Secure qualified substitute instructor when needed.
  • Act as a Primary Responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in pool area and provide backup to lifeguards as needed in emergencies and crowd control.     
  • Report injuries and complete required forms.             
  • Support and follow YMCA policies and decisions and answer member questions about the YMCA and its programs and fitness-related questions.
  • Attend 4 quarterly Water Fitness staff meetings.  Staff meeting must be made up within 1 week of missing meeting.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS OF A WATER FITNESS INSTRUCTOR:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred National Accredited Water Fitness Instructor Certification (AEA)
  • If hired, maintain water fitness certification as required by certifying agency
  • At least 6 months experience as a fitness class participant or 4 weeks team-teaching a fitness class (deep water experience)
  • General knowledge of exercise training and leadership, including basic anatomy, physiology, and exercise principles
  • Physically fit in order to demonstrate all phases of aerobic exercises
  • Able to hear and follow the beat of the music and have visual ability to observe class participants during workout.  Provide music that meets YMCA standards.
  • Able to vocalize cues and use equipment properly
  • Mentally alert to recognize potential hazards and accidents
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively
  • Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200lb. person
