Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Cabin Life Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that campers experience a safe, values-based, and engaging camp environment. This position will assist three Unit Coordinators and will be a member of the summer Leadership Team.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Associate Executive Director to develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate cabin life needs and strategies (struggling campers, staff, etc.)
  • Provide leadership and administrative support as directed by coordinating, organizing, or leading camp activities or by providing administrative office support as needed.
  • Support Unit Leads, Cabin Leaders and others as assigned.
  • Participate in Leadership Team training prior to staff training.
  • Prepare for, assist in leading, and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Assume responsibility for the heath/welfare of campers and staff entrusted to his/her charge.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Observe camper and staff behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Consult with the Associate Executive Director daily concerning problems that need to be addressed and/or excellent staff performance.
  • Serve as support to unit leads and cabin leaders with campers that require additional behavior management techniques.
  • Evaluate current season, make suggestions, and create a Cabin Life Coordinator manual.
  • May be called upon to live with a cabin group or to assist counselors with a cabin group.
  • To perform all other duties as needed or assigned.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Previous camp leadership preferred
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants.
  • Must demonstrate leadership qualities-allowing for the development of personal and professional interpersonal relationships with staff, campers, parents, and others.
  • Must be committed to the mission of YMCA Camp Shady Brook and be an advocate and role model for staff and campers alike.
  • Experience and/or previous training in youth camping.
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification
