Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Challenge Course Coordinator will ensure a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals on the high ropes course, low ropes course, climbing wall, and natural rock. This individual will constantly enforce regulations and practices that ensure the physical, mental, social, and emotional safety of all participants and staff. This individual may also be called upon to serve as a Cabin Leader.

Summer Season: (5/25 - 8/1) with room and board.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a safe and positive challenge course/climbing wall for participants utilizing challenge by choice.
  • Organize and lead initiatives, low ropes, high ropes courses, climbing walls, and natural rock-climbing walls depending on the age of the campers.
  • Inspect the course(s) daily to ensure that the equipment is safe and functional.
  • Complete accurate usage logs on a daily basis.
  • Immediately report any safety, health, or equipment maintenance problems to the Associate Executive Director upon discovery.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies and inform the Associate Executive Director of needed supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings. 
  • Play an active role in all camp activities.
  • May be called upon to live with a cabin group or to assist counselors with a cabin group.
  • Will work stay over weekends as assigned.
  • Evaluate current season, make suggestions, and create a Challenge Course manual for following season.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications

  • At least 21 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Previous challenge experience required
  • Challenge Course certification from a nationally recognized organization preferred
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience with youth or family programming
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth and should relate well to all age levels and backgrounds of people
  • Must ensure a safe and positive experience for campers and staff
  • Ability to plan, initiate and lead small and large group activities
