Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Music Program Lead/Cabin Lead will be responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the YMCA Camp Shady Brook’s Music program. You will also act as a cabin counselor providing direct supervision to a group of youth campers. As the Cabin Lead you will be responsible for the health, safety, welfare and personal wellbeing of campers on a 24-hour basis and promote and support the potential of all youth in programs and facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a creative Music program incorporating the YMCA’s values 
  • Write and/or supervise all lesson plans for Music classes
  • Immediately report any safety, health or equipment maintenance problems to the Associate Executive Director upon discovery.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies and inform Associate Executive Director of needed supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties
  • Will work as a cabin leader
  • Play an active role in all camp activities
  • Will work stay over weekends as assigned
  • Evaluate the current season and make suggestions for future season
  • To perform all other duties as needed or assigned

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Creative and enthusiastic person who is able to relate well with campers, staff, and parents
  • Previous experience or extensive knowledge of instructing and leading music program and activities
  • Prior experience with youth and family programming
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth, and should relate well to all age levels and backgrounds of people
  • Develop a one-week curriculum that includes instruction, songs, experimentation, song production and games
  • Facilitate community living with youth in a cabin or tent platform (see Cabin Counselor job description)
  • Ability to plan, initiate and lead small and large group activities
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration
