Instructors should have expertise in at least one martial arts discipline, usually demonstrated by achieving a black belt or equivalent level. They should also be patient and have great people skills to connect with and motivate students.
Responsibilities may vary depending on the dojo or training group, and instructors who own their own academy will be responsible for all aspects of running a business.
A martial arts instructor's job description includes teaching students, developing lesson plans, and ensuring the safety of students:
Teaching: Demonstrate techniques, explain principles, and coach students
Lesson plans: Prepare daily lesson plans that are fun and creative
Student assessment: Observe and assess students, and provide feedback
Safety: Ensure the health and safety of students, and teach safe training habits
Promotion: Promote classes
Other responsibilities: May also include answering emails and phone calls, scheduling trial classes, maintaining student records.
